Cold heats up sales at hardware stores

KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) – Inside Kettering’s Handyman Ace Hardware Store you can guess how much salt is in a jar to win a prize, but outside it there’s no need to guess about the amount of salt…it’s lots.

But we found that salt and shovels have some company this year on the winter must-have’s list.

“It’s been a mixture of traditional items during the winter but also stuff you might sell year round,” says Ace Manager Bill Pittl.

Many of those items are in the plumbing aisle.

“A lot of people were fixing their pipes and their “P Trap” because it froze and it busted,” Pittl says.

With the temperatures dropping once again, we wanted to know what you can do to keep from joining the list of people fixing pipes.

Pittl says he has two easy do-it-yourself suggestions.

One is to protect your pipes, whether with insulation or with heat tape, which has become another big seller.

“You would put it on galvanized pipe and plug it in and it would keep it from freezing,” Pittl says.

The second is to check your furnace filter.

“One big key is keep your furnace filter changed because the air is going to circulate through the house,” Pittl says.

Because you can take guesses at the amount of salt, but you don’t want to guess as to the price of repairs.

“We’re here to help people get through this harsh winter,” Pittl says. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
