Unclaimed funds for the taking in Greene County

XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) – $19,886 is up for grabs in Greene County on the 2014 Clerk of Courts Unclaimed Funds list.

“I’ve never really been able to figure out why people forget that they had money posted on a case here,” said Terri Mazur, Greene County Clerk of Courts.

Mazur said all of the money has been paid towards cases, restitution or bonds and has been sitting in her office for at least two years.

Now that it has made the unclaimed funds list she will hold onto it for just 30 more days. Then the funds go to the Greene County Treasurer for five years and after that, if still unclaimed, to the Ohio State Treasurer.

“We are only as good as the address we are provided and because we process millions of dollars every year it’s hard for us to find the correct addresses all the time,” added Mazur. “We try to be as proactive as we can, but with limited staff, sometimes that’s not always possible”.

Mazur says the sooner people claim the money, the easier the process is. To claim funds, owners just need to bring proof of identification to the Clerk of Courts office inside the Greene County Courthouse.
