Cold can be costly to construction projects

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The cost of the cold has some construction companies doing their best to schedule around the winter weather.

When we talked with Danis Construction managers they said they don’t have any workers on outside projects in the area and that’s by design.

“You want to plan and get a structure topped out before the cold weather,” says Senior Project Superintendent Dennis Turner.

Turner says the cold only adds to the expense of projects.

“It slows your production down,” Turner says.

Turner says providing heat on an unfinished building can also be expensive.

“If you’re working where you’re trying to do some temporary heating and we’re under propane shortages, that costs you more,” Turner says.

Making up lost time due to the weather can also be costly.

“In the spring you’ve got to get back on schedule,” Turner says. “Then you have to go into overtime, which is a cost.”

But sometimes, the project requires working through the cold. In those cases, workers have safety meetings to talk about the best ways to not be overly exposed to the frigid conditions.

“When you’re coming into work you prepare yourself to be out in this stuff,” Turner says.
