Snowmageddon? Not so fast

Forecast models

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Some images are circulating around Facebook indicating a major snow storm for our area next week.

Storm Team 2 meteorologists say while there are some models indicating the potential for accumulating snow, it’s still too early to tell.

“Facebook will pretty much tell you the weather if you need to know, everyone is complaining about it,” says Joshua Matthews.

Many people like him use social media to get their forecast.

But, Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Jamie Jarosik says you should beware of the source.

“A lot of people on social media have been posting a model run from yesterday that shows a ton of snow with actual measurements here and it is way too early to put down measurements in any one given place in the midwest,” she explains.

Jamie says some models show the Midwest will get some accumulating snow Tuesday night and into Wednesday, but we may see rain here in the Miami Valley.

“You’ll see, right now, I have a 30-40 percent chance of rain or snow in the forecast for next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Still some uncertainty there, but it’s on our radar,” explains Jamie.

Storm Team 2 will continue to fine tune the forecast as we get closer to the event.

“We don’t want to panic anyone.  We try to do it level-headedly.  We can say, yes, we may see some snow next week, but we may also got rain that would cut down totals.  It is just too soon to tell,” comments Jamie.

Matthews says that’s why he waits until the day before to check the forecast.

“I mean, it’s nothing to me.  Like I said, I’m from Michigan.  I’ve lived in Colorado.  They get a foot of snow and ten below you’re walking.  So, I mean, everyone here freaks out about it.  I just don’t get it,” he explains.
