EATON, Ohio (WDTN) – A Preble County veteran was honored Friday with the Purple Heart.
Army Sergeant Maurice Miller served in Vietnam in 1968.
His unit was ambushed resulting in the deaths of some of his fellow soldiers.
Miller suffered a bullet wound to the left side of his head.
He continued to fight until his ammunition was depleted and he was rescued.
Miller says he doesn’t think about his service very often.
“It’s something we had to do. It’s over with. Don’t dwell on it. Move on.”
Miller’s family members worked with Speaker of the House John Boehner to obtain the award.
He is also the a recipient of a Combat Infantry Badge and Army Commendation Medal.
The Purple Heart is bestowed upon military personnel injured or killed in action.
