DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A Dayton man is in jail after police say he tried to scrap metal.

Thomas Martin, 29 was arrested on charges of receiving stolen property.

According to police, Martin brought aluminum wheels to the Franklin Recycling Center at 2015 East First Street Saturday morning.

Martin told police he brought in the rims from Voss Hyundai in Centerville where he works. Police called the business to verify Martin’s story, but Martin’s boss said he was never given permission to take the parts and scrap them.

Martin then admitted to police in a statement that he took the wheels out of the trash bin to help support his heroin problem.

Martin’s boss arrived on scene to identify the rims and said the parts were from a wheel warehouse.

Officers said Franklin Iron had a list of rims brought in by Martin since December totaling more than $2,600.

Martin was booked into the Montgomery County Jail. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
