Benefit planned for Beavercreek homicide victim

BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (WDTN) – A Beavercreek man was killed recently while on vacation with his family.

Now, his friends are coming together to support his two children.

“It’s not too often that you see a situation where a person will lay down their life for another, but that’s what Brett did.”

Brett Walquist is being called a hero for trying to scare off an armed robber who broke into the family’s vacation h in Puerto Rico.

The 41 year old was stabbed to death by the suspect after the two got into a fight, according to investigators.

His wife tried to grab the attacker before he escaped.  Neither she nor his two children were hurt.

Juan Acevedo, 21, is now in custody.

“Brett was a family man. He spent time, he coached his son’s basketball team. Brett was a guy that everyone loved. He was a good friend and a good husband and a good father. It’s unfortunate that this happened,” said Marc Sweeney.

Sweeney is a family friend who helped organize a benefit for Brett Friday night.

It runs from 9:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. at Jimmie’s Ladder 11 on Brown Street in Dayton.

15% of the proceeds will go toward the Walquist Family Fund.

He says the money will mostly be used for his son and daughter’s college educations.

“This is a very tragic situation. It’s a family that lives here in the Dayton area. We would love people to come out and support the family through just being there.”
