Competition in the Olympic Winter games in Sochi, Russia begins Thursday as athletes take to the venues for skiing and ice skating.

The Sochi games will be the first time figure skating is held as a team event in the Olympics. Competition begins TODAY! Skaters from all four olympic disciplines (Men’s, ladies, pairs and ice dancing) will each perform a short and long program. Scores from all performances are added together to determine the winners. Canada and Team USA are among the favorites to bring home gold in the new event.
With only 17 days to work in events across 15 different sports, it’s not unusual for preliminary rounds to begin before the Opening Ceremony. Thursday features Snow events Snowslope, Downhill and Mogals qualifications as well as ice events Team Men’s and Pair’s short program.
The Opening Ceremony will take place Friday (You can watch beginning at 7:30 p.m. on WDTN) along with Alpine Sking training runs.
The first medals of the Sochi games will be awarded Saturday.
