Hearing scheduled in Middletown theft case

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WDTN) – A Middletown woman accused of stealing her neighbor’s life’s savings will appear before a judge Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.

The alleged victim says Rhonda Smith was like a daughter to her

When this happened it felt just like something stabbed me,” said Melissa Cornett. “It hurts me. I don’t feel like I could trust anyone now.”

Police told 2 NEWS Smith, 39, befriended 56-year-old Melissa Cornett, who has multiple sclerosis, and then drained her bank accounts.

Officers said Smith used the money to buy a camper, take vacations and buy gas for her friends all while helping Cornett around the house.

Police said more people could be charged.
