Local substitute teacher guilty in child porn case

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A man trusted to teach children admits he’s guilty of child porn charges.

31-year-old Justin Cohen got busted when he sent some of those pictures to an undercover Troy police officer.

2 NEWS Investigates has learned Cohen has a long history of working with kids in the Miami Valley as a substitute teacher, tutor and Dayton School volunteer.

Justin Cohen pleaded guilty to nine counts of pandering sexually oriented material.  Eight of those are for possession. The ninth charge is for creating child porn.

Major Daryl Wilson with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office tells 2 NEWS Investigates, Cohen sent the sexually oriented material to a Troy detective on May 15th of last year. When police searched Cohen’s Vandalia home they found hundreds of images of child pornography.

2 NEWS Investigates has learned Cohen has been registered with the State of Ohio to work with kids since at least 2005.  According to the Department of Education website, Cohen still has active credentials for a two year provisional license for early childhood.

On his LinkedIn account, Cohen lists extensive work with students as the owner and operator of “Quest for Success,” a tutoring agency.

We even found a letter to parents issued from Dayton Public Schools in 2011 that recommended his company. A Dayton Public Schools spokesperson says Cohen would have passed a background check to be a contractor with the school.

In fact, the Department of Education website said Cohen had several BCI and FBI background checks. The last one listed was in 2010.

Major Wilson credits good police work with finding Cohen but adds there are more people like him out there.

“It is alarming and the public should be aware of this going on,” continues Major Wilson, “they are in our community. One of the things you can do is to talk to your child and make sure that the child knows what is right and what is wrong, but it is very alarming to know that subjects like Mr. Cohen are out in our community,”

Cohen faces thousands of dollars in fines and could serve up to 20 years in prison. He will also have to register as a sex offender with Montgomery County. Sentencing is March 12th.
