HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio (WDTN) – Huber Heights police are losing a member of their force, but that’s a good thing.

Sammy the police dog is retiring. He’s been on the force since coming to the United States from Holland in 2003.

Sammy was trained as a narcotics dog. He helped on raids throughout the area.

His handler says the decision to retire is ultimately left up to the vet.

“I could tell in the last couple years, he was slowing down.  We transitioned him from a patrol dog to a narcotics dog.  It’s much easier on him,” said Aaron Harlow, Sammy’s handler.

Sammy will now stay with Harlow after his 11 years of service to the community.

By the looks of the photo, Sammy is already ‘livin’ large’.
