KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) – Kettering police have one man in custody after an afternoon standoff.

Police say a 56 year old man was holed up inside his apartment in the 2200 block of East Whipp Road.

SWAT members were called after the man opened the door holding a large knife.

The standoff had traffic blocked on parts of East Whipp Road.

After nearly an hour, police say the man peacefully surrendered.

“Several units were evacuated. The one adjacent was unoccupied, so there was no risk there, but we did have to evacuate some residents from the building,” said Ron Roberts, Kettering Police Department.

The man was described to be suicidal.

He was taken to Kettering Medical Center for examination.

Police say the man could face charges. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
