Thawing ice creates warning about gas meters

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The bitter cold air created a lot of ice around the area that is now melting and causing hazards for homeowners.  While many of us are enjoying the warmer temperatures, there are a few hidden dangers after the cold and snowy winter we’ve been experiencing.

Ice that has been clogging up gutters and hanging from eves is now beginning to fall and Vectren is warning customers they could cause damage to meters.

The company has seen a few incidents, but they have not been tied to one specific area.  If the ice falls on the meter, it could cause significant damage and a possible gas leak.

Scott Emrick with Vectren says, “Yes, it could be a gas leak if it hits it hard enough or in the right spot, it could cause a gas leak.  If that happens, we encourage you to call Vectren as soon as possible.”

The number to call is 800-227-1376.  Vectren also recommends removing any hanging ice to prevent damage to the meters. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
