DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A man is arrested after officers said he tried to attack them after becoming belligerent.

Robert Atkinson, 41, was arrested on charges of assault, criminal damaging, and criminal trespassing.

Officers were called to the Waldorf Lodge 76 at 311 South Paul Laurence Dunbar Street after 11 p.m. Friday.

According to police, a security guard initially approached Atkinson after a woman told the guard he stole her purse. When the guard told Atkinson he needed to leave because he was highly intoxicated, Atkinson became argumentative and refused.

As guards escorted Atkinson out, he became combative and tried to punch one of the guards. According to the police report, the guard then punched Atkinson knocking him to the floor. Atkinson then tried to wrestle with another security guard. Once in handcuffs, Atkinson continued to resist and kicked a hole in the wall of the building.

Atkinson was taken to the Montgomery County Jail where he continued to resist. Officers had to pepper spray him and place him in a restraint chair. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
