DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The City of Dayton has hired a new fire chief.

Jeffrey Payne will replace Chief Herbert Redden who retired last year.

Chief Payne’s new position is effective immediately as he’s been serving in an interim capacity since July 2013.

Chief Payne has worked solely for the Dayton Fire Department over the last 25 years, consistently climbing in the ranks.

“Jeff Payne has already served the Dayton community with dedication and distinction,” said City Manager Tim Riordan. “Residents and businesses will continue to experience first quality emergency services through his leadership at the Dayton Fire Department.”

Payne will manage 353 personnel and a $36 million budget.

A public swearing in ceremony is set for Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the City Commission Chambers at 101 West Third Street.
