DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The RTA bus driver was shot and stabbed when he was attacked by three teenagers this morning.

Rickey Waggoner, 49, stopped his bus in the 1900 block of Lakeview Avenue just before 5:30 a.m. to fix a mechanical problem when police said when he was confronted by the teens.

He told police he was working on the bus when they approached from behind and he heard one say, “If you want to be all the way in the club, you have to kill the polar bear.” Waggoner said he turned to see three males, one with a gun pointed at his chest. He said the gunman fired twice.

Investigators told 2 NEWS Waggoner had a religious devotional called “The Message” in his left front shirt pocket that stopped the bullets and saved his life.

“There was obviously some kind of intervention involved in this incident because he probably should not be here,” one officer said.

Waggoner said he then began to fight his attackers, and during the scuffle was shot in the leg and cut on the arm. He managed to stab one of the suspects with a pen, and he was able to get a hold of the suspect’s gun and knife.

The suspects ran toward an awaiting car, described as a dark colored, older model Ford.

Fearing they were going to come back, Waggoner fired on them with their own gun, emptying the magazine. He told investigators he thinks he hit one of the suspects.

Waggoner was able to get his bus running and made his way to the bus hub at 4225 W. Third St., radioing for help along the way.

When police arrived he was still sitting in the driver’s seat.

He was taken to Miami Valley Hospital. His condition has not been released.
