Vigil set for slain Huber mom

MELISSA NILSON

HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio (WDTN)  A candlelight vigil will be held for the Huber Heights mother who was shot and killed outside her home Friday.

Family and friends of Melissa Nilson, 26, will gather at Viki Lynn’s School of Dance in Dayton on Friday, February 28 at 7 p.m.  Nilson helped teach at the studio and was a long time student throughout her childhood. The studio is located at 611 Spinning road.

“We want to celebrate her life,” said Jonathan Nilson, who is Melissa’s brother. “That is what Melissa would have wanted.”

Melissa Nilson was shot and killed outside her home on Cree Avenue February 21, 2014.  Police said her boyfriend, Ryan Mitchell, 28, was witnessed leaving the scene.  Mitchell was arrested not long after the shooting occurred when he crashed Nilson’s car Rip Rap road. Dash cam video captured Mitchell attempted to flee from police.

Mitchell appeared in court for the first time Monday.  He is facing 12 felony charges in connection to Nilson’s death, including murder, grand theft of a motor vehicle and failing to stop after an accident.

Nilson leaves behind a 4-year-old son.  A memorial fund has been set up in her name for him.  Donations are being collected through any Wright Patt Credit Union.

Donations are also being accepted through a GoFundMe account set up in Melissa Nilson’s name.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at Jazz Central on March 1 from 6- 10 p.m. A memorial party will follow at Club Vex in downtown Dayton.
