Waiting for Mother Nature to turn up the heat

KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) – When you walk inside many stores, you can almost taste spring, but outside, the seasoning still has a winter flavor and that is eating into spring sales.

Many like Ruth Ruff are still in the market for winter related items.  “One of our heaters died on us, so we’re hunting another one,” Ruff says.

Inside stores, you can still find things from shovels to sleds, but they are quickly wheeling the spring items in and the winter ones out.

“We’re limited because we’re in that transition,” says Kettering Handyman Ace Hardware Manager Bill Pittl. “We can get some things. Maybe not as much as we could before.”

Winter doubled sales at this Kettering Handyman Ace Hardware.

Other than the occasional grill or bag of fertilizer, so far it has put the freeze on spring sales.

“It’ll be a slow climb,” Pittl says. “Once it gets warm and stays warm, it’s going to be constant mulch, dirt, fertilizer.  It’s going to be great.”

2 NEWS found many stores are still without rock salt or are using substitutes like water softening salt for those who are desperate.
