Sheriff: Murder suspect ‘sucker punched’ deputies

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The man accused of killing a Huber Heights woman lashed out at officers at the Montgomery County Jail in an incident that looked like a baseball brawl.

Sheriff Phil Plummer told 2 NEWS 29-year-old Ryan Mitchell was in a restraint chair for his own protection, February 22, the day he was booked into jail.  When jail officers were moving him out of the chair, Mitchell punched one in in the jaw.

“He suckered punched one of our officers,” said Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer.  “It may not look good, but our guys are taught to protect themselves.”

The officer struck back and five other officers piled on to bring Mitchell back under control.

Mitchell suffered two black eyes.  “We had proper staffing, medics, and show of force as the six guys (deputies) are in charge.  Do what you are told.”  Mitchell was naked at the time because any inmate who makes a threat against himself is undressed before being put into a restraint chair.

Mitchell is charged with murder, felonious assault on a police officer, felonious assault, grand theft of a motor vehicle and burglary in connection to the February 21 death of 26-year-old Melissa Nilson.
