DAYTON, OHIO (WDTN) -The University of Dayton Flyers men’s basketball team closed the 2013-2014 regular season with a 60-48 victory over the Richmond Spiders on senior night at UD Arena.
UD was led by senior co-captains Devin Oliver (a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds) and Vee Sanford (14 points and five rebounds). Dayton will head into the Atlantic 10 tournament with a 22-9 overall record including a 10-6 conference record. The Flyers have won nine of their last 10. UD has also moved from 56 to 41 in the RPI in the last eight days.
Richmond drops to 18-13 overall and an 8-8 record in the conference.
Dayton used a first-half surge to seize control of the game. Richmond leading scorer Kendall Anthony exited the game with 9:01 left in the first half after picking up his second foul. The Flyers led 9-7 at that time. UD increased their lead to 19-10 over the next four minutes with Anthony on the bench. Overall the Flyers used a 13-0 run, capped off by a Kyle Davis fast break lay-in to push the Flyer lead to 24-10 with 4:25 remaining in the first half.
A Khari Price three pushed the lead to 32-17 with 1:18 left until the half. A Devon Scott lay-in with 31 seconds left until halftime gave UD a 34-19 halftime lead.
Richmond threatened late in the second half as Anthony drained a three from the wing to cut the Richmond deficit to eight (50-42) with 6:22 left. Sanford responded with a jumper to push the lead to 10 (52-42) with 5:51 left. Terry Allen converted a lay-in to cut the Flyer lead to eight again, but Sanford took over and extinguished any threat of a Richmond comeback by scoring five straight points for UD.
Jordan Sibert joined Oliver and Sanford in double-figures with 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the three.
UD won the battle of the benches as the Flyer bench outscored the Spider bench 25-5. Dayton also won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Richmond 33-26. UD shot well from beyond the arc, converting 7-of-16 (44%) from the three while holding the Spiders to just 5-of-16 (31%) from beyond the arc.
The Flyers have will either be the five or six seed in the Atlantic 10 conference tournament depending on the outcome of the Saint Louis vs. UMass game tomorrow.
Dayton’s next game will be on Thursday in the Atlantic 10 Tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Game time and opponent are to be determined.
