FAIRBORN, Ohio (WDTN)- There is growing pressure on the military to investigate and combat sexual assaults.

Wright Patterson Air Force Base formed a sexual assault response team.

This week, the team along with staff from Wright State University, are participating in a self-defense class aimed at preventing sexual assaults.

At the end, all 90 participants will be qualified to teach others what they learned and potentially prevent future sexual assaults on base and on campus.

“Here we have the United States Air Force that is protecting us against threats around the world, but within the Air Force, no one is really protecting them against themselves” said Rener Gracie, Head Instructor for the Gracie Academy.

Colonel Cassie Barlow says it was an easy decision to invite Gracie and his team to Fairborn to teach the class.

“It’s  training on assertiveness and training on self confidence and we think that those are things that are very complimentary to this culture of respect and dignity that we have in the United States Air Force,” said Col. Barlow.

Col. Barlow said she would like to expand the training to the entire base in the future
