VAN BUREN TWP., Ohio (WDTN) – The teenager struck and killed by a pickup truck Tuesday evening was a sophomore at Anna High School.

Zachary Kerns, 16, of Botkins, was killed when he was hit by the truck on Lock Two Road near Kettlersville Road in Van Buren Township around 7:40 p.m.

They say a pickup truck driven by Richard Kuck, 72, of New Knoxville, was westbound when it hit the boy who was riding his bicycle. Kerns was also traveling west.

Kuck told deputies the sun blinded him and he did not see the teen.

Anna Local Schools Superintendent Andy Bixler told 2 NEWS many of the students at the high school did not learn of their classmate’s death until they arrived to school Wednesday morning.  Bixler says counselors and clergy members were brought in to assist grieving students.

Kerns played football and was about to start running track.
