Dayton vs. Stanford game ‘conflict of loyalties’ for area professor

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – There’s no question fans want Dayton to bring home a win Thursday, but for one local professor the Sweet 16 game will test his loyalties.

Reece Newman teaches at Sinclair Community College.  His clothes didn’t match when he walked into work Wednesday.

“It’s a conflict of loyalties,” said Newman, as he sat down at his office desk, wearing a University of Dayton hat and a Stanford University sweatshirt. “I’m in a PHD program in higher education leadership at the University of Dayton,” explained Newman.  “I’ve lived and worked here since 2010, but I’m a 1974 graduate of Stanford University.”

Newman won’t make any predictions about the outcome of the game Thursday, but said the pressure from others is making him lean towards hopes for a Dayton win.

“I have a Stanford heart and a Dayton mind,” said Newman. “I’m conflicted about this wonderful game in the Sweet 16 but all of my students here at Sinclair Community College insist that I cheer for UD, as well as they should.”
