Burglar tries to smother victim

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A man is behind bars after police said he broke into a man’s home and then tried to smother him.

John Riggs Jr., 39, was arrested on charges of aggravated burglary.

The incident happened in the 300 block of Deeds Avenue after 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to the victim, Riggs kicked open his back door and tried to smother him with a pillow. The victim fought back.

Riggs then fled the scene to a house nearby where his brother lived.

Officers interviewed Riggs’ brother. He told police that he and Riggs were drinking that evening and Riggs said he needed money. He said that’s when Riggs left and went to the victim’s house.

Riggs was booked into the Montgomery County Jail. He is expected in court on Monday.
