HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio (WDTN) – A family of six was chased from their home by a fire Monday afternoon.

Huber Heights firefighters responded to the 5100 block of Packard Drive just after 5:00.

They arrived to find smoke pouring from the home.

Firefighters say the family smelled smoke and went to check a garage that was converted into a utility room.  They opened the door and saw the flames.

The family says that is when they fled and called 911.

Firefighters say the utility room suffered extensive damage. The rest of the house suffered smoke damage. The family will not be able to stay in the home, but the homeowner says it is repairable.

The family dog, fish and hamster all got out safely.

No one was hurt.  An exact cause is under investigation, but the family suspects an electrical fire. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
