DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The inmate who was airlifted to a hospital from Tri-County Regional Jail on Saturday was assaulted by other inmates.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and Tri-County Jail Director, Scott Springhetti confirmed David Piersol, 39, remains in critical but stable condition after he suffered head trauma.

A Sheriff’s Office release says the assault took place in the general housing unit of the jail.  Champaign and Union Counties are investigating.

Piersol is facing charges of rape, sexual battery, and three counts of gross sexual imposition. According to the indictment the victim was under the age of ten.

On Monday, a document was filed requesting Piersol be released on his own recognizance because he was in the hospital on life support.

Springhetti said this is an isolated incident but they will be reviewing their procedures and policies.

No charges in the assault have been filed at this time.
