DAYTON, Ohio(WDTN)- Michelle Karkalik watched as Dayton Police surrounded her neighbor’s home in the 700-block of Hodapp Avenue Saturday morning around 10 am.
Officers responded after getting a call concerned about a woman’s safety inside.
They heard three gunshots and that’s when the SWAT team was called..
Surrounding homes, including Karkalik’s were evacuated.
The SWAT team finally entered the home around noon.
Inside, they found a 38-year-old woman with at least one gunshot wound and her 45-year-old husband dead.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identifies him as Dustin Leonard.
Police say Leonard shot his wife before killing himself.
“I knew something was wrong when I saw him pack up about a week or so ago. And I saw the cops out here a couple of times and I go that’s not good,” says Karkalik.
Police say they were called to the home twice in the past few weeks.
On March 22nd for domestic violence and on April 6th for a violation o fa temporary protection order.
Karkalik says she wanted to help.
“I’ve been through domestic violence counseling so I understand. I just wish she would’ve said something to me because I’m sure it might have turned out a little different,” explains Karkalik.
And she says her thoughts and prayers are with her neighbor.
“You need someone to talk to when you get out, you come talk to me. You could’ve talked to me this whole time. I’m really sad but I hope you get well,” comments Karkalik.
Police aren’t releasing the woman’s name or condition.
