Huber Heights honors 2 of its officers

HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio (WDTN) – Special honors were awarded Monday night for Huber Heights police officers credited with saving lives.

Officer Shawn Waler helped to capture the suspect in a homicide on Rip Rap Road.

He was commended at the city council meeting for his actions.

“It’s nice. I don’t do this for a pat on the back, I don’t do this for recognition,” Waler said. “I do this because it’s what I’ve wanted to do since this is the reason I got into this, to try to keep the community safe and to look out for folks.”

Also honored was Officer Michael Hawley.

He responded to a call of an 8-year-old boy who was choking.

Officer Hawley arrived before the medics and did the Heimlich maneuver, saving the boy’s life.

“I’ve been a police officer for 25 years, so to save one kids life like that is a pretty cool thing,” said Hawley.

He said the boy was with his great grandparents and grandparents at the time.
