Police look for 17-year-old in killing of football standout

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) – Springfield police are looking for a 17-year-old boy in connection with the death of a high school football star.

Police believe the teen fired the shot that killed Jeffrey Wellington, 17, outside apartments in the 2300 block of North Limestone Street early Easter morning.

Officers are worried about more violence if the suspect, who 2 NEWS is not naming because he’s a juvenile, doesn’t turn himself in.

“We need this to come to a peaceful resolution and at this point in time we’re not sure that’s the direction this is headed,” says Springfield Police Chief Steve Moody.

Wellington was shot and killed early Sunday morning. Investigators say he was trying to break up an argument between a group of people at a party.

“There’s no reason why my brother’s dead in this situation,” says Wellington’s brother Michael.

Grief counselors were available Monday at Springfield High School for students needing help with what happened.
