Trotwood man sentenced for killing son

TROTWOOD, Ohio (WDTN) – A Trotwood father was sentenced Tuesday for killing his son.

Royal Garrett Sr. was ordered to serve to 15 years-to-life in prison.

He shot his son, 37-year-old Royal Garrett Jr. at an apartment building on Autumn Woods Drive, in October 2013.

Officials say ongoing tension between the father and son led to the violence.

Family members asked the judge for leniency, saying they have all paid the price of losing not one loved one, but now two.

“We recognize and understand the tragic situation that has occurred and I know that he will pay, greatly, as I said, emotionally, physically as we all will,” said the defendant’s sister.

Garrett pleaded guilty April 8 to one count of murder.  He is eligible for parole in 2029.  He will be 79-years-old.
