XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) – A new program in Greene County is giving people with warrants out for their arrest, a new way out.
There are currently 51 people on the Domestic Relations Division’s active warrant list. The top two offenders owe more than $63,000 in backed child support.
“The ball gets rolling. The person gets behind on their support. They get so far back it seems helpless to them, I’m sure it does,” said Judge Steven Hurley.
Judge Hurley’s program allows offenders to go onto the court’s website and print out a form requesting a review hearing. After they fill it out and drop it off and the judge said he will immediately drop the warrant.
“The goal is not necessarily to arrest these people and have them do the time,” he said. “The goal is to get them back in the system and hopefully begin paying the proper child support that they owe. That benefits the children, the people they owe, everyone.”
Judge Hurley said backed child support is a problem for domestic relations courts throughout the state.
In Greene County alone, more than $720,142.00 is owed.
“If we can get some of these people in the system, paying their support obligations, I think everyone is ahead,” Hurley added.
