Community gathers for fire victims

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The Dayton community gathered Friday evening in memory of a woman and her son who died in a house fire early Thursday morning.

The vigil for Tia Strickland, 37, and Ricky Turner, 15, was held at Triangle Park at Riverside Drive and Ridge Avenue.

It was just after 1:00 a.m. that the fire started in the middle of the home, quickly spreading through the first floor.

The fire department believes the fire was accidental, caused by careless smoking.

A next door neighbor says Tia Stickland’s fiance knocked on her window for help.

There was only so much they could do. Both Stickland and son died from smoke inhalation.

We talked to one woman whose son was one of Ricky’s best friends. She says the news devastated them both.

“I’m so used to seeing him every day at my house and it’s just so upsetting to me because he’s like a son. We just asked him did he want to go Gatlinburg with us you know, we going on vacation in September and I’m just so numb, I’ve never seen my son so upset like that you know it’s just devastating to me,” said Jackie Decembly Dorsey, friend.

Funeral arrangements are in place for the mother and son.

Visitation will be Friday, May 9 at the House of Wheat Funeral Home at 12:30 p.m. followed by funeral services at 1:00 p.m. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
