Kentucky Derby horse has local connection

SPRINGBORO, Ohio (WDTN) – A local group is hoping Danza shows the field in the Kentucky Derby ‘Who’s the Boss’.

That’s exactly what happened in the Arkansas Derby a few weeks ago as Danza won at 41 to 1 odds.

This week the horse has been training at Churchill Downs. Eclipse Chairman Lee Midkiff says he looks great and is taking to the surface well. At last check he was sitting at 10 to 1 odds to win.

Eclipse has one of its offices in Springboro inside a historic house. Now their horse will try to make history.

The horse is named after Tony Danza. The horse’s father was named Street Boss, so Midkiff says they were looking for a connection and came up with the show ‘Who’s the Boss’.

We asked Midkiff what it’ll be like on Derby Day to make that walk past the grandstands with Danza.

“It’s the closest that a non-athletic middle aged man can get to feeling what it’s like to walk onto the field of the Super Bowl,” Midkiff says. “You bring that horse out of the back barn and make that walk to the paddock in front of 150,000 people.”

Eclipse actually has four horses running in the slate of races at Churchill Downs tomorrow.

We are being told that Tony Danza himself will be there with the group to watch the derby.
