DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Things have returned to normal outside the Dayton VA Medical Center following a shooting Monday afternoon, but the alarm afterward is something many there won’t soon forget.
Hundreds waited, watched and wondered outside the center, now knowing what was happening inside.
“Police with rifles grabbed me and said get out of here fast, get out of here fast,” says Susan Getz, who was inside the building at the time of the shooting.
As people streamed out of the Dayton VA Medical Center, word quickly spread that a gunman was inside.
“I said you’ve got to be kidding me,” Getz says. “They said we’ve already got one person shot, get out of the way.”
Once outside workers sought safety where they could.
“I’m scared, that’s why I’m way over here,” said one worker at the scene.
After about two hours people were allowed back inside the medical center. We asked one veteran if he has any safety concerns in light of what happened.
“No I’ll still come up here,” says Iraqi War veteran Troy Miller. “This is a home away from home.”
