SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) – A 3-year-old boy is recovering from a dog bite.

Police say a pit bull bit the boy on Lagonda Avenue around 3:30 p.m.

Investigators say Robert Rife was walking his dog when he stopped to let some children pet it.

They say the dog got loose and attacked the boy who was playing in a nearby yard.

Officers believe the man walking the dog was drunk at the time and was unable to free the boy from the dog.

Rife now faces misdemeanor charges by the Humane Society including failure to control a dog, failure to license a dog, and failure to get the dog proper shots. He was cited and released.

The boy was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital with serious injuries to the head and upper body.  He is expected to be OK.
