DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The wife of a pilot who crashed outside Memphis, Tennessee says she is optimistic that her husband will be healed and come back as a whole person.
“It’s your worst nightmare,” said Katherine Wingate. “It really is your worst nightmare.”
Wingate, a Dayton area pediatrician, talked to our partner station WMC-TV in Memphis. 2 NEWS has learned Kent Wingate is able to breathe on his own, but he is on a respirator because he has a collapsed lung. We have also learned he has multiple broken bones and a traumatic brain injury of which the level is not known.
Kent Wingate took off from Wright Brothers Airport South Wednesday to attend the funeral of a friend.
“This man had spent days planning this trip,” said Wingate. “He knew what the weather was. He knew what the plane was like. He knew everything about this trip.”
Initial reports indicated the plane ran out of fuel.
Federal aviation officials say even though maintenance crews are available, the pilot is ultimately responsible for the plane’s overall flight readiness.
