PLEASANT HILL, Ohio (WDTN) – A buggy with four people on board was destroyed in an accident in Miami County Wednesday morning.

A dump truck northbound on SR 721 clipped the buggy near the intersection of SR 718. Officials told 2 NEWS it appeared the driver of the truck was trying to pass the carriage when the crash happened.

Ellen Grim, 36, of Arcanum and three children ages 5, 8 and 10 were riding in the buggy. Grim suffered facial injuries and the children were taken to Wayne Hospital with cuts and bruises.  They are all going to be okay.

The truck driver, Jeremy Kautz, 38, of Ansonia, was cited.

“The horse and buggy is considered a motor vehicle in the State of Ohio, so they have to yield to them just like they would a car,” said Sgt. Lee McCartney with the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

Kautz was not hurt.

“This could have been a lot worse. It could have been a direct hit,” added Sgt. McCartney.

The horse pulling the buggy survived the crash. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
