DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Rescue crews were called to the Great Miami River Thursday afternoon when two kayakers ended up in the water.

The two men capsized after going over the low dam at Monument Avenue.

Both men, described as experienced kayakers, managed to get to shore on their own.

One pulled himself out near the Third Street Bridge, the other near Fourth Street.

Firefighters that responded said the men are lucky to be alive and said higher depth of the water probably worked in their favor because it lessened the turbulence of the dam’s backwash.

Both men walked away exhausted, but uninjured.
