XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) – The Greene County Combined Health District is offering advice for you to protect your health after a flood, especially when you are cleaning up.

Always be sure to wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer whenever you come in contact with flood waters.

Officials say you should never allow children to play in flooded areas as there could be dangerous bacteria.

Disinfect everything contaminated by flood waters including toys, flooring and appliances.

Items that cannot be cleaned should be thrown out such as mattresses, carpet, pillows and stuffed animals.

To avoid developing mold in your house you should remove and discard drywall and insulation that is contaminated by flood waters.

Thoroughly clean all hard surfaces such as flooring, concrete, wood and metal.

The best mixture for cleaning is hot water and laundry or dish detergent, then sanitize the affected areas using bleach.

Help the drying process by using fans, air conditioning units and dehumidifiers. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
