Emotional sentencing day for triple teen fatal

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WDTN) –  Jesse Whitaker was sentenced today in a Franklin County courtroom for the crash that killed three Bellbrook teens.

Whitaker, who is now 19, was 17 at the time of the accident, and was sentenced in juvenile court.Bellbrook crash

The judge suspended Whitaker’s driver’s license until he turns 21. He must serve probation until May 30, 2016, perform 300 hours of community service, and the judge imposed a curfew.

As he sentenced Whitaker, the judge apologized to the victim’s parents and said to Whitaker,  “I think you deserve to go to prison, but the law does not allow me to do any more.”

The judge could have ordered time in juvenile detention, but did not.

In April, Whitaker pleaded guilty to charges in juvenile court, including vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter.  Vehicular manslaughter charges were dismissed.

Authorities said Whitaker was driving a truck on Wagner Road in November 2012 when he lost control and hit a tree, killing all three of his passengers.
