Sentencing set for Butler County teen in home arson case

HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) — Sentencing is scheduled June 10 for a 17-year-old honor student who pleaded guilty to charges that he tried to kill his parents by tying their bedroom doors shut and setting their suburban southwest Ohio home on fire.

Butler County Common Pleas Court Judge Craig Hedric scheduled sentencing to follow a morning hearing in which he is expected to hear testimony about the teen’s mental state and other factors.

A defense attorney has maintained the teen’s real intention last October was to prevent his parents from stopping him from harming himself, and that his action was a cry for help.

He pleaded guilty to attempted murder and arson charges Monday, just before the start of his trial.

The Associated Press isn’t naming the teen because of his age.
