DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A Dayton police officer fired several rounds at an approaching vehicle late Wednesday night.

Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl says the officer was dispatched to 42 Willowwood Drive around 11 p.m. to investigate a report of shots fired.

That’s when the chief says an SUV coming down the street started accelerating toward the officer. Someone in the SUV had a gun and shot at the officer.

Chief Biehl says the officer took cover, then fired at the SUV as it drove past. The officer was not hurt.

The vehicle ended up crashing in the parking lot of the EJ Brown School on Willowwood. The suspects took off running. Police found a gun nearby that they believe was discarded by one of the suspects.

Chief Biehl says there were two or three suspects inside the SUV. They have not been caught and the chief says they should be considered armed and dangerous.

There was blood inside the SUV. At this time, officers do not know if it’s from one of the suspects or someone else.

Investigators say the initial shots fired call that brought the officer to Willowwood is likely linked to a shooting victim who showed up at Good Samaritan Hospital. We don’t know the circumstances that led up to that shooting or if the victim has any connection to the suspects who ran from the crash scene.

Officers are canvassing the neighborhood, trying to find out more about both incidents.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 222-7867.
