SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) – A Springfield man is accused of murder in connection to the death of an 11-month-old child.

Dorneil Cumberland was arrested in Columbus this morning.

Police say they responded to a home in the 300 block of East John Street on a report that an infant was not breathing.

Cumberland is the boyfriend of the child’s mother. He was watching the child while she was working.

Cumberland told police he went upstairs to check on the baby who he found not breathing. He said the baby’s 3-year old brother was trying to wake his sibling.

He then claimed that he saw a penny in the back of the child’s throat and worked to remove, then started CPR.

The coroner says the autopsy is inconsistent with Cumberland’s story. He says the baby suffered skull fractures and other broken bones. The baby died at Springfield Regional Hospital.

Cumberland is now charged with murder and involuntary manslaughter.
