DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The deaths of a Dayton woman and her son was ruled accidental Thursday.

Tia Strickland, 37, and her son, Ricky Turner, 15, were killed in a fire at their home on Pinehurst Avenue last month.

The coroner ruled that both died from smoke inhalation.

The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. A third woman living at the home had to jump onto her neighbor’s roof to safety.

Firefighters think careless smoking started the fire.

There were two smoke detectors in the home, but neither worked.
