Police: Change tactics when caught in the crossfire

MIAMI TWP., Ohio (WDTN) – Two shooting suspects are out there somewhere eluding police.

They are wanted in connection to the shooting in the parking lot of the PF Chang’s restaurant in Miami Township Wednesday night.

Police now say that Jermain Boone, 41, died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The other victim, Damon Thompson, 46, was shot in the arm. He was treated at the hospital and released.

There were two apparently targeted victims, but there could have been many more.

The actions of some witnesses may have saved their lives.

Police say the way to safety is no longer hiding away until help comes.

“In an open area we want people to run for safety run for cover to evacuate and that’s the number one thing we want to teach people is to remove yourself from the threat. Don’t just hide and wait, unless that’s your only option. If you can get away safely from a threat or someone trying to do you harm, we want to evacuate and get away,” said Eaton Police Chief Chad DePew.

Chief DePew says witnesses and victims aren’t the only ones that have to change their tactics.

Even training for police has changed because the dangers have expanded.

“… people are using all sorts of weapons or what we call tools of death. It can be a knife, screwdriver. We saw in California a couple weeks ago, somebody using their vehicle to try and kill people. So essentially, we don’t prepare for one particular weapon just that person’s intent on killing somebody else,” says DePew

Police do want to caution you about stepping in to try and stop the shooter.

The best thing to do is to get out of harm’s way and call police.
