Rising waters take over Washington Township

WASHINGTON TWP., Ohio (WDTN) — Buckets of water poured over areas in Washington Township closing roads and forcing drivers to find alternate routes Friday afternoon.

“IIt seemed like it came out of nowhere,” said Washington Township resident Susie Cunningham. “Our whole backyard is covered as well.”

Water covered tires and parking lots became swimming pools.

“At first people were driving through it but really cautiously, and now it’s kind of impossible to get through,” said Cunningham.

The parking lot to the Washington Township Rec Center off S.R. 725 also became a pond. John Wright just came to the rec to play basketball when the heavy rains moved through. He found his car along with a friend’s underwater. His stereo and speakers were ruined by the rain.

“This is definitely out of nowhere, and I definitely didn’t expect water to be all the way up in the seats of the car,” said Wright.

Friday’s flood waters submerged cars all over Washington Township. Several vehicles even got stuck.

While most of the rising waters have receded, residents are hoping they won’t see this kind of rain again for a while.

“I’ve heard that this road has never done this before. So we’re hoping that this is the first and the last,” said Cunningham.
