CASTINE, Ohio (WDTN) – The Darke County Sheriff’s Office is warning motorists to stay off a stretch of road under construction through the Village of Castine.

U.S. Route 127 is closed for a construction project right now, but deputies say some drivers are still trying to drive through. They say since last week’s closure, several trucks have slipped off the roadway and nearly tipped over. Residents are also complaining that travelers are moving barricades and driving through.

The closure is the main stretch of Route 127 through Castine. Only residents who live in the village or have official business are permitted through. It is closed to everyone else.

The detour is U.S. Route 40 east of U.S. Route 127 and State Route 503.

The unwanted traffic is causing delays in construction and puts workers in jeopardy.

Deputies will be upping their enforcement of the area and will ticket anyone in violation.

The construction is expected to last for the next three months. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
