BROOKVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) — A Brookville car dealership is trying to lure customers in with a new “Buy a car, get a gun” promotion.
Jerry Kilgore, owner of Kilgore’s Auto Sales in Eaton and Brookville says he’s in favor of having a community that is smart with firearms.
“We have a marquee that says buy a car, get a gun. You’re going to have some people that are curious,” Kilgore said, “Do they have a stockpile of guns somewhere in the back? And no, the answer is no.”
Kilgore’s is giving away gift certificates to Gander Mountain in Huber Heights with a vehicle purchase of more than $4,500. Those gift certificates can be used toward purchasing a gun and conceal-carry license.
The sign went up two days ago, and seems to be having an immediate impact.
Brielle West, a barista at Hip-Stirs Coffee in Brookville, says she’s seen traffic pick up in the area.
“They are getting a lot more customers, I think. I don’t know if they’re actually going over there and buying anything or not, but I see a lot more people going in there to talk to them,” West said.
Kilgore says he expected some negative attention when the sign went up.
“This promotion came with the possibility of some negativity. And that’s the great thing about this country. People have the freedom to support this or not,” Kilgore added.
Another barista at Hip-Stirs Coffee, Danielle Sprada, said smaller towns like Brookville are ideal for a promotion like what Kilgore’s is doing.
“I didn’t necessarily think it was a bad idea. Especially in the smaller towns. You know, you have a lot of hunters,” Sprada said.
For Kilgore, the promotion is an opportunity to educate the public about gun safety, while giving them a chance to buy a vehicle.
