Dragons get walk-off win against Captains

Dayton, Ohio – Dayton’s Tanner Rahier slid around the tag of Lake County catcher Eric Haase to touch home plate with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Dragons defeated the Captains 3-2 at Fifth Third Field. The win was the Dragons fourth “walk-off” win of the year.

Rahier started the bottom of the ninth with a double off the glove of diving Lake County center fielder Clint Frazier.   Rahier went to third base on a wild pitch on the first delivery to the next hitter, Gabriel Rosa. Rosa then lifted a 1-2 pitch to medium deep center field.   Frazier made the catch and fired a strong throw home as Rahier tagged and attempted to score. The throw was slightly to the third base side of the plate.   Haase took the throw and tried to make a sweeping tag on Rahier, who tried to slide around the catcher.   Rahier touched the plate with his hand just before the tag to end the game.

The Dragons took a 2-1 lead to the top of the ninth inning before Lake County tied the game on an RBI double by Nellie Rodriguez.   Rosa, the Dragons center fielder, fell to the ground on the play and the ball landed just to his right, allowing Haase to score from first base to tie the game.

Rosa helped the Dragons to the lead in the seventh when he was hit by a pitch and then stole second and third before scoring on Joe Hudson’s sacrifice fly to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead.

Dragons starting pitcher Amir Garrett worked the first three innings before leaving the game following a lengthy rain delay.   Garrett did not allow a hit or a walk while striking out four and giving up an unearned run. Zack Weiss replaced Garrett and fired three no hit innings, walking one and striking out three. The Captains did not have a hit until Dorssys Paulino’s bloop single to right with two outs in the seventh. They finished with four hits, three in the ninth inning.

Joel Bender, the third Dayton pitcher, improved to 4-0 with the win. He worked three innings, allowing four hits, one walk, and one run with four strikeouts.

The Dragons collected seven hits. Daniel Pigott was 3 for 4 to raise his average to .310.   Carlton Daal was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Jon Matthews had one hit to extend his hitting streak to seven straight games.
