FRANKLIN, Ohio (WDTN) — Two men jumped in to help an officer in trouble as he was arresting a suspect on Saturday afternoon.
Officers were checking the area of Sixth Street following a burglary when they spotted the suspect, Charles Cole of Franklin. Franklin police said Cole became verbally aggressive and then assaulted an officer during a fight.
As the altercation continued, two citizens came to the officer’s assistance helping the officer take Cole into custody. They have been identified as 33-year old Benjamin Lawson and 19-year-old Levi Miniard of Franklin.
“A lot of people keep saying I’m a hero and it’s really not that,” Miniard says. “You don’t just watch somebody get beat.”
Cole was transported to the Atrium Hospital where he was admitted for a 72 hour evaluation. Cole will be charged with felony burglary, felony assault on a police officer, and obstructing official business.
The officer was taken to Sycamore Hospital where he was treated and released for minor injuries.
Franklin Police Chief Russ Whitman says he was happy the pair helped out, but it’s not something he advises everyone to do.
“These two felt they were able to do it safely and they did do it safely but we’d never ask a citizen to get involved if it’s going to risk them or someone else,” Whitman says.
